EVENT - Reinventing Architecture and Interiors: the past, the present and the future

An International Conference on the re-use and re-design of buildings in contemporary settings

This conference is organised by Interior Educators (IE). They have over 50 people presenting papers from all around the globe as well as key speakers from leading design practices such as Gensler, Brinkworth Ltd, AHMM, APA, shedkn, Lovely etc. 

The history of design has traditionally been a story of new ideas, new theories and, above all, new construction. However, today, the developed world is on the cusp of a new era. The financial crisis, the sustainability movement and the conservation agenda are all leading to ever more alterations of existing buildings and ever fewer new build projects. This new condition will have major consequences for all those involved in the design of the built environment both now and in the future.

The objective of the conference is to examine the practice of interior design and architectural re-use in the context of this new condition. It will look at historical tendencies, current conditions and future possibilities.

The theme of PAST, PRESENT and FUTURE offers participants the chance to look at any aspect of the theme from the vantage point of time.

NEWS - JISC MediaHub, new resources available online

JISC MediaHub is a new multimedia platform which is part of the JISC eCollections. 

This new platform offers a wealth of digital image, video and audio collections accessible from a single interface. The new platform offers access to free-at-the-point-of-use images, video and audio content licensed for educational and research use, via an easy-to-use interface, cross-searching across all the collections and the ability to source content from a wide range of content-providers through a thumbnail and metadata search portal. 

If your institution is a subscribing member of JISC MediaHub, you can view all the collections. There are also options to view collections on websites outside MediaHub (unrestricted and restricted).

EVENT – Understanding the rules of the game: helping students really grasp what we are looking for when we mark

This is the seventh seminar in the 2011/12 educational research seminars series run by the Learning Institute at QMUL. Led by Professor Sue Bloxham (Professor of Academic Practice at the University of Cumbria),  the seminar will present the findings of research which investigated tutors' thinking whilst marking work across a range of disciplines including medicine, social science, education and creative arts. The research showed that the learning outcomes or assessment criteria which often form the basis of guidance and feedback to students do not appear to form the basis of tutors’ judgements which tend to be more holistic and impressionistic. The seminar discussion will build on what we know about helping students develop an holistic understanding of what they are trying to do in their writing.

EVENT - SEDA Workshop - Working with Cultural Diversity in Higher Education

The evolving dialogue about internationalisation in Higher Education has moved from considering issues surrounding teaching international students to recognising students and teachers as co-creators of the learning environments and positive responses to cultural diversity in the classroom. This workshop explores the implications of culturally diverse classrooms for programme designers and tutors, and examples of practice which embraces cultural diversity. It is based on SEDA Special 28 and led by Dr Monika Foster, the editor and co-author of that publication.

EVENT - The Only Way is Up: Using Credit to Build Progression Ladders from FE to HE

NEWS - register for free access to BBC Northern Ireland’s news footage

The British Universities Film & Video Council (BUFVC) is pleased to announce the pre-launch of Chronicle: BBC Northern Ireland’s television news from the 60s and 70s, for exclusive use by UK higher and further education institutions. The audio-visual archives of the BBC contain a wealth of material gathered since it was founded in the 1920’s but it remains largely inaccessible. ‘Chronicle’ has made part of that archive available to UK higher and further education by digitising hours of content from the BBC Northern Ireland’s vaults.

The digitised material will allow users to explore events over a 7 year time period (1969-1976) of Northern Ireland’s history, delivering a rich and contextual experience from a political, historical and cultural perspective.

Chronicle provides Authenticated Users with free access to digitised copies of selected news and current affairs material covering Northern Ireland and The Troubles, via a simple, user-friendly interface and web-based tools for searching and viewing.

NEWS - Film, Fashion & Consumption Journal published

Film, Fashion & Consumption is a peer-reviewed journal from Intellect, designed to provide an arena for the discussion of research, methods and practice within and between the fields of film, fashion, design, history, art history and heritage. The journal seeks to stimulate ongoing research on these topics and to attract contributions not only from scholars researching in these areas but also from practitioners, who are traditionally excluded from academic debate. The journal thus aims to unite and enlarge a community of researchers and practitioners in film, fashion, consumption and related fields, whilst also introducing a wider audience to new work, particularly to interdisciplinary research that looks at the intersections between film, fashion and consumption.

Call for contributions to Networks 18

Networks 18, to be published in July 2012, may be our final issue. We plan, therefore, to celebrate the creativity, skill and attention our colleagues devote to teaching and learning in art, design and media higher education.

With the radical restructuring of UK higher education funding, the ways that staff, students and institutions respond in their approaches to teaching and learning in creative subjects have never been more significant.

We invite you to share feature articles, case studies and project reports exploring the issues, and highlighting the practices, that you, as teaching and support staff in art, design and media subjects, consider to be important as this new period in higher education begins.

We welcome content written by both students and staff or collaboratively.

All issues of the Journal of Writing in Creative Practice are freely available online if you are a Writing-PAD member institution and if your institution is subscribing to the JWCP. 

The JWCP is the official organ of the Writing Purposefully in Art and Design (Writing PAD) network. It offers art and design institutions an arena in which to explore and develop the notion of thinking through writing as a parallel to visual discourse in art and design practice. The journal aims to extend the debates to all national and international higher educational art and design institutions.

The Journal of Gaming and Virtual Worlds  is seeking contributions to its 4(3) issue (autumn/winter 2012). Papers from all areas associated with video/computer games and virtual environments are welcome.

Deadlines for submissions: 

30 April 2012 for long articles; 

15 May 2012 for short articles, conference/project reports, poster abstracts, interviews and (machinima/book/game...) reviews.

The following word limits apply:
